2021 Program: Coronavirus Update
Dear Second-Grade Teachers,
Due to class cancellations because of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, it appears unlikely our volunteers will be given the green light to continue to work with your second graders this year.
But if you are in communication with your students and parents and you wish to continue the development of their social-emotional skills, you are in luck. The lessons including the literature and activities are meant for any adult to teach and have success, and we have made them available online.
Find the materials at the Westerville school district website, www.westerville.k12.oh.us, which is the district home page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page under Organizations and select ‘Westerville Rotary I-Can Program.‘ That will take visitors to the I-Can Curriculum, where you can select the unit and lesson you wish for them to teach under Files/Links.
Most of our volunteers were ready to teach Unit 5 Relationship Skills, Lesson 3 on March 16 when volunteer visitors were barred from entering district school buildings. As you can see from the format of the lesson it should be easy and fun for a parent to work with their child, everything is provided. Even though they will not have the book, all the stories are on either YouTube/Hoopla (Read Along). There is also an activity for each lesson. If your Rotary volunteer was at a different point in the program, they will contact you individually to provide you with the appropriate information.
Please let us know if we can be of any further service or if you have any questions. We wish you and your students the best during this very difficult time.
Sincerely,
All Your I-Can Volunteers
The I CAN Program
The Rotary Clubs of Westerville conduct the I CAN Program, teaching to 650+ second graders in the Westerville City Schools throughout the school year.
In helping to develop Character Education, the program reinforces the concepts taught through the PATH Program by second-grade teachers and school counselors.
Usually meeting weekly, Rotary volunteers with the aid of high school helpers teach six broad concepts through 25 lessons:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Personal Responsibility
- Decision-Making
- Relationship Skills
- Social-Awareness
